A foreign girlfriend told me last week that she never ceases to marvel at the docility of the average Nigerian. To illustrate her point, she talked about a recent experience at one of our airports.

IN the best case scenario,countries rally together in moments of national crisis. They put aside superficial divisions; suspend deep-seated hostilities to create the necessary national accord to defeat a nation-threatening crisis. Many examples abound in history.

I  COULDN’T help it. As soon as the new figures conjured by Dr Okonjo-Iweala out of Nigeria’s “rebased” Gross Domestic Product exercise came out, I shouted abracadabra! Then I chanted, “Come and see Ah-meri-ka wonder! Come and see Ah-meri-ka wonder!” I promptly substituted “Nigerian” for America in that spell-casting ditty of itinerant tricksters that used to haunt the busy bus terminals of our major cities. I completed the expression of my wonder by crying out loud, “The more you look, the less you see!” 

IN the last two months, Nigerians have groaned under the pain of fuel scarcity. Since February they have been wondering if and when solution would be found to the persistent scarcity.

Regressive alliance: Rather than being a progressive party, the APC is regressive. Indeed, it is a cruel joke to describe it as progressive. A party led by a former military dictator and a civilian dictator cannot be progressive. Can any right-thinking person actually mistake Buhari for a progressive? Would a progressive truncate a democratic government? Would a progressive muzzle the press? Would a progressive arrest and jail people without trial? Would a progressive call for rioting and bloodletting if he loses an election? Certainly not!

UNTIL recently, Kathleen Sebelius was the U.S. Health Secretary. As April unfolded, she sent in her letter of resignation to her boss, President Barack Obama. That move caught practically everyone by surprise because there was hardly any indication that she was about to quit. But she did, and it was not a forced move as the highly authoritative New York Times newspaper reported that she quit entirely of her own volition.
