IF Nigeria is a nation of laws and of the rule of law, the presidential candidacy of Muhammadu Buhari should end this week. The reason is well-known to all. Buhari swore an oath on his INEC application that his credentials are with the military. This turned out to be a lie.

YOU may not have heard about an American journalist known as Brian Williams. If so, Wikipedia has this brief introduction: “Brian Douglas Williams is an American journalist who is the anchor and managing editor of NBC Nightly News, the evening news programme of the NBC television network, a position he assumed on December 2, 2004.”

”Media reports at the end of July 2007 confirmed that the Presidential Committee which probed the $480 million which the CBN invested in the African Finance Corporation (AFC), has completed its investigations. After what appeared to be a painstaking audit exercise, over three months, and spanning three continents, the Committee Chairman, Tunde Ogunshakin, disclosed that CBN’s equity contribution was actually $462.923 million.

AFTER what looked like a prevarication, Ohanaeze Ndigbo has finally endorsed the second term bid of President Goodluck Jonathan. This much was made known last week when its President, Chief Gary Enwo-Igariwey, led a delegation to present a document to that effect to the Governor of Abia State, Chief Theodore Orji, who is the Chairman of the South East Governors Forum.

The report by Umar Muhammed disclosed that “The budget which was christened the budget of “sustainability” would be funded with resources from the Federation Account, internally generated revenue [IGR] Value Added Tax, and SURE-P.”

Glaring lopsidedness in the composition of his Supreme Military Council and citing of Petroleum Special Trust Fund projects in favour of the North, in addition to hisoverarching concern for the promotion of puritanical Islam strongly indicate that Gen.Buhari might be a sectional leader and polarising figure if he becomes President.

Next Saturday is presidential election day, and, this being the last Sunday before that “make-or-break” election, readers would have expected today’s column to be about the election. But, once in a life time, a person faces a personal dilemma; he has to choose between two vital duties. Such was my problem when Chief Olufemi Daramola, KJW, Alage II of Omuo-Ekiti called me to announce he would be 80 today. I had choice to make and this is it. Let me quickly explain.

Let me first make a quick comment on the recent controversy regarding the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC’s) distribution of the Permanent Voter Cards, and the larger implication for protecting the right of suffrage for Nigerians. Voting in elections is both a right and an obligation for citizens of any nation under democratic rule, and it is incumbent on both the citizens and the state to protect that process.

It’s a few days to the most important date in the history and future of Nigeria in recent times – February 14, 2015. This is the day Nigerians will go to polls to determine who will rule them for the next four years. Thanks to democracy, It is a day of choice. On Saturday, we shall troop out, armed with our PVCs and make a choice of the man or woman to steer the destiny of Nigeria in the new dispensation.

The refusal of the candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), General Buhari to participate in this year’s Presidential debates has once again thwarted our efforts at organizing a debate to enable Nigerians assess the candidates properly so as to determine who to vote for.
