Re: State police here
Some readers were vehemently against my view that we’re not quite ripe for establishing State Police, because we lack the maturity to handle it in a way that would bring us peace, and give justice to all.
Much ado about nothing
“Life doesn’t count for much unless you’re willing to do your small part to leave our children—all of our children—a better world.” —President Obama.
TELLING LIES IN GOD’S NAME
Jesus calls the devil “the father” of lies. He says: “He was a murderer from the beginning, and does not stand in the truth.” (John 8:44). This profile corresponds to that of Paul in the bible. Paul was a murderer of Christians from the beginning and he is an inveterate liar.
New social media new social ills (2)
Being a platform that provides one easy access to unlimited information and an audience base of hitherto unimaginable numbers at the mere click of a button, it is no wonder that new social media has gained such popularity within such a short time. Indeed, there have been many success stories of people who by simply posting a five-minute video of themselves on YouTube have achieved worldwide fame and fortune; Justin Beiber is one that readily comes to mind.
Broken wings
When we lose loved ones, the pain is great. When we lose loved ones through the fault of someone else’s incompetence, the pain is deeper. We want payback and retribution. We are inconsolable with words of comfort. We look up to the heavens and wonder why our creator would let this kind of misfortune visit us.
National honours and the pride of a nation
We are such an interesting nation peopled by different characters and shades of individuals with no discernible compass. We do things in very ridiculous manners and get national awards for it. Nigeria is an award-giving-ceremony country but with less achievements both at the individual and collective levels, and often times one wonders why the ostentatious display of success without visible signs to showcase such achievements.
The Press and Sport
I find myself writing sports again in spite of my vow not to ever undertake such a depressing exercise after seeing more than half a century of a joyful career gradually dissolving into sheer dismay.
State of the Nation: Prosperity through peace
I WAS born in the Northern part of Nigeria (Jos, now the capital of Plateau State) some decades ago. As my name reads, my parents (both) were from the Southern part of the country (South Western zone). My primary education took place in two different schools run by Christian institutions.
Most praised, most criticised
Nigerians are a peculiar breed. This shows up everywhere. In a football match with another country on our home ground, Nigerians would start off encouraging their team; but as soon as the Nigerian team falls into goal deficit, Nigerians would switch their support to the visiting team and, depending on their level of disappointment, they might begin to haul stones at the Nigerian players.
N5,000 Note and matters arising
My interest today on the new N5,000 currency note about to be issued by the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, has nothing to do with the controversies of whether it should be issued or not. From all indications it is already a done deal.
