THE ruling Peoples Democratic Party went into the last National Assembly elections that had the effect of a hurricane on its house of cards with a sense of hubris.

Lately, I stumbled on TV broadcast of Lamido Sanusi’s acceptance speech on occasion of his award as Silverbird TV’s 2010 ‘Man of the Year’. The overt import of the CBN Governor’s patriotic fervor and passionate love for Nigeria would hardly be lost on the audience, or indeed, on other Nigerians, who watched on TV.

Yesterday, Nigerians went to the polls to elect their president. The polls’ results will become clearer today and a new president would have emerged. Judging from last week’s showing at the polls, General Muhammadu Buhari, the presidential candidate for the Congress for Progressive Change (CPC) is unlikely to garner enough votes to be the new president, unless a great shift of grounds happens at the last minutes to change the last tallies at the polls. But Buhari has run a good campaign. He has appealed, cajoled, and he has presented himself forcefully on the platform of progressive change.

Just what can an individual do to a politician you’ve helped to vote into power, who neglects to keep his campaign promises? That was the question on the lips of most of our readers who reacted to the subject. It’s a helpless situation we find ourselves in as you can’t force the person to keep those promises.

One of the worst things the IOCs do to Nigeria is to turn ordinarily articulate Nigerians into enemies of their own countries. Their stock-in-trade is bribery and corruption, not only in Nigeria but worldwide. The potential of any living being is proportionate to the belief system that it holds! That potential is a dormant force waiting for activation for good or evil. Inside everyone is a saint or a sinner; our core belief system determines the manifestation of that potential.

Literary Author Henrik Ibsen, in most of his works has advanced cogent philosophical rationale for supporting the ‘righteous minority’ -as against, that is, what he described as the “damned compact, liberal majority.” Ibsen was in fact one of few Western literary writers who created and promoted an antithesis to the popular so-called democratic refrain ‘the majority is always right’.
