Nigerians know too well, that sinking feeling when all items on the household shopping list cannot be covered by the regular budget. The options are either to cut down or do without some basic items, or alternatively make do with less preferred but cheaper substitutes. The depressive impact of a continuous price spiral on the average family’s welfare is therefore a very familiar theme.

A sudden earthquake is about to hit the whole of Nigeria this month; not the sort of physical tremor which devastates buildings, breaks up bridges and brings down power lines – while destroying lives. Ours will be a social upheaval never experienced in this country for as long as the oldest of us can remember.

THIS President Muhammadu Buhari regime will never stop amazing us in its capacity to disappoint or fall hand, as we say in our Pidgin English. Can you imagine? Fifteen months after it swept into power on the crest of a litany of promises garbed in the mantra of “change”, he has turned around to tell us that “change” begins with us!

We are in September, somehow, I am excited. September seems to be a special month. It is the ninth month of the year. Expectant mothers always look up to the ninth month for delivery. Perhaps this is why it is called the month of fruitfulness. It is the month of expectation. It is the month that one begins to appreciate that the year is running out . Hence, the determination to work harder at attaining set goals.
