Reading British and American news reports about the Olympics, one is easily convinced that these two countries in particular, know what it means to not just be proud of one’s country but to take practical steps to show the world why exactly said country is worth mentioning at all.These are not countries where principal officers of National Assemblies allegedly employ around 400 aides. Neither are these countries where cost cutting applies only to the poor.

Now the Rio Olympics is over it may be time to take stock of Nigeria’s participation at the games. After what were clearly shoddy preparations or in fact non-preparation for the games, the result of our participation is now out for all to see. A bronze medal in football couldn’t possibly be all we spent the last four years preceding the games preparing for. It was clear that nothing good could or would come out of Rio for Nigeria in the light of how we programmed ourselves to fail.

Out of the 46 years of Nigeria’s political independence, northern elites had power on their grab for nearly 38 years; what is boggling the minds of northern talakawas is: what had stopped the elites then in making a true resolute effort in the search for oil in north despite the fact that preliminary geological survey had shown evidence of oil existence?

Presumably this principle is being pushed on us because the West believes that it is an effective way to stop corruption but more importantly by pursuing the money, they are better able to find those fomenting radicalisation and paying for terrorism.
