The typical Nigerians outside Nigeria normally will keep their links with home, but the links begin to weaken as they struggle towards integration into the societies of their residence.

IT was a Law student, Lucien Trinnou, speaking last Friday in Ouagadougou, that gave this description of the uprising in Burkina Faso, which swept away, Blaise Compaore, one of the most despicable characters to ever seized power in any African country. When Compaore murdered the revolutionary icon, Thomas Sankara, in Octtober 1978, he murdered the hopes of millions of the working people, the youth and poor people, not only in Burkina Faso, but all over the African continent.

There was a Continent, the Dark Continent, so-called. The continent had leaders who were accepted at home and respected across the world. At the mention of such names as Nnamdi Azikiwe, Obafemi Awolowo, Aminu Kano, Kwame Nkrumah, people knew them and what they stood for. Long after the death of the first Prime Minister of Zaire, Patrice Lumumba, from that distance, young Nigerians were still proudly identifying with his name.

It was nearly one year in transit before arriving on my desk after the author, Bishop Matthew Hassan Kukah, promised to send it to me. Looking at the amount of intellectual effort and physical exertion that must have gone into the 519-page excellently packaged tome, I decided to delay it further to this, more auspicious occasion, of launching the new logo to commemorate 20 years of myPeople and Politics column here in Vanguard.

Not unaware of the general perception that Nigerians have of them, Nigerian politicians often try to appear above board. But they don’t stop at that, they also want to be seen to be above board. It does not matter to them what actually is the reality of their political life, what counts for them is to be seen to be doing what is expected.

All Nigerian elections are like wars. Correction: they are wars, involving massive deployment of resources, losses of investments, political ambitions, lives and limbs. Victors emerge, but they rarely have time or space to savour victories because the war never really stops.

It is customary to refer to members of the House of Representatives as “honorable.” In which case, the appropriate title for the current Speaker might be the Right Honorable Aminu Tambuwal. But the activities of the Speaker over the last four years, capped by his recent defection to the APC, shows that such a title would be grossly misplaced if applied to him.

TODAY, Americans go to the polls in their mid-term elections. These elections come two years into the presidency of every American leader, hence the “mid-term” nature of these cyclical polling.
