In our last edition, we discussed briefly the essence of prayer. In this edition, we will take a deeper reflection on prayer and its effect in our lives.

As Christians, we were all taught to pray.  Most, if not all of us are aware of the Lord’s prayer given to us by our Lord Jesus.

However, in this modern age, people hardly find time to pray.  Many are too busy to spend time to talk to God even for their own needs.  Not a few also find it a burden to carry the Holy Bible to the church.  They would rather use the Bible as saved on the mobile phones.

For several others, it’s just that life has been so good to them, they are not involved in the search for anything, so why take Christianity seriously.

There are people who believe that praying is a waste of time as it may not bring instant results, so they would rather depend on fellow human beings or some other supernatural powers.

One can go  on and on to discuss reasons why people tend to be distant from prayers.

Our focus here is not to emphasize these negative excuses but to consider  prayer and its positive effects.

“Nothing encourages a man like answers to prayers, when a man prays and gets an answer, he likes to pray again “ .  This is  a statement  frequently made by Pastor Samson Ajetunmobi , President of the Men of Issachar Vision, Nigeria.

Pastor Gbenga Oso , General Overseer of Laughter Foundation Christian Ministry described  Prayer as “ a way of communicating with God”.

Why must we pray? Let’s consider the life of a young girl born with the silver spoon,  had good education gets married, has a good job and within the short time in her marriage, she’s had children.  From the  physical point of view,  she has no problems. Life is good for her.

However, unknown to her there   may be other problems yet to manifest.   What if her marriage is threatened and she is unaware? What if her envious colleagues want to put a stone  on her way or a  limitation to stop her progress.  What if envious  in -laws  begin to say to themselves, that she is just spending her husband’s money lavishly.   It does not matter to them that she is gainfully employed too? What if  some for no  reason just want her troubled.   I mean those who are not at peace with the peace of the Lord that she enjoys.

There are a thousand and one reasons why people want to afflict another person.

For instance, a lady then a young teenage girl went to spend her holiday with her uncle.  Unknown to her parents, this uncle was an occultist ringleader. He made his divination and saw that this visiting girl will be greater than his own daughter.  He made up his mind to stop her.   He put a mark on her never to get married. She must remain lonely so that the husband that God wants to use to raise her up will never find her. So, though the lady is good looking with good manners, not a single man ever asked for her hand in marriage.

Every relationship she had would break up as soon as she begins to look up to marriage.

There is also the story of a Pastor newly married  who went to his village to bring a boy who is his relation into his matrimonial home. The Pastor’s intention was to give the boy city life experience and assist with his education.

Once the boy came into the house, his wife would get pregnant and it would be aborted within 12 weeks.

This continued for a while and then the Pastor knew that there must be a spiritual force behind  his fruitless efforts at child bearing.

The man decided to pray and fast.   Then the Lord opened his eyes.  By the grace of  God this season the Lord will open your eyes to see the solution to every challenging situation of your life in the name of Jesus. Please don’t say that he is a Pastor.  You too can pray.

According to the Pastor, he saw the boy in a dream and they were engaged in a fight.  He told the boy but I brought you here to help you. Then the boy replied “  It is not me.  They sent me”.  Who sent him?  The forces of darkness in the Pastor’s family.

Brethren, it was the month that he had this dream that the Pastor’s wife conceived again and this time she carried the baby through and delivered safely.

What if the Pastor had not prayed?  What is the aim of those who sent the boy?  They must have said, ‘Oh Mr.  Kind, you have money to spend and we’ll help you  spend it”.

The point I am making here is that your prayer is an investment that could ward off unpleasant occurrences in your life. No matter how comfortable you are, you still need prayer.  If not for anything to thank God for keeping you alive and supplying you with oxygen at no cost.

If you think this isn’t important, take a visit to the hospital and find out the cost of oxygen for those placed on it.

Prayer is also a way of sowing into your future.   The longer you pray, the better  your life becomes. If you are too busy to pray, you may never be truly fulfilled in life.

Our Lord Jesus admonished us  in Luke 18 vs. 1 “And he spake a parable unto them to this end, that men ought  always to pray, and not to faint”. In other words, we should never get tired of praying.  We need not allow any challenge to overwhelm us.  Rather, we need to pray with all our hearts.

The Holy Bible said of the man of God; Elias  in  James 5 vs. 17&18 “ Elias was a man  subject to like passions as we are, and he prayed earnestly that it might not rain: and it rained not on earth by the space of three years and six months. And he prayed again, and the heaven gave rain, and the earth brought forth  her fruit”.

This Bible says when we pray earnestly, we’ll get our desires.

Is anyone in your household going through a health challenge? As you seek medical attention, remember that prayer is crucial. No wonder the motto of the Lagos University Teaching Hospital ( LUTH) is “ we care, God heals”.

Beyond that, the word of God in James 5  vs. 13-16    teaches us how to handle  health challenges.

It states, “ Is any among you afflicted? Let him pray. Is any merry? Let him sing psalms.  Is any sick among you, let him call for the elders of the church; and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord.

And the  prayer of faith shall save the sick, and the Lord shall raise him up; and if he have committed sins, they shall be forgiven”.

The last verse, 16 “ Confess, your faults one to another, and pray one for another, that ye may be healed.  The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much”.

Bear in mind  that Jesus is the Doctor of doctors.  He is the greatest physician.  As you seek medical advice, please don’t downplay the spiritual  aspect, which is prayer.

Brethren I wish you a fruitful prayer week in Jesus name.
