Last week, President Muhammadu Buhari was in the United States for a state visit. During this visit to Washington, the Nigerian president had bilateral meetings with President Barrack Obama of the United States in the White House.

To be fully human entails the ability and freedom to manifest optimally the creative powers inherent in homo sapiens. This is achievable not through amassing wealth one does not really need but by engaging productively in meaningful work and love. According to the German-born American psychoanalyst, Erich Fromm, freedom can be looked at from two main perspectives, namely, “freedom from” and “freedom to.”

Last week, Barack Obama, the President of the United States of America, had the honour of hosting our own President Muhammad Buhari. It was a glorious occasion for Nigeria, as we learnt from “historians” that Mr. Buhari was the second Nigerian leader to have stepped foot into the prestigious Blair House in Washington. The first, they recollected, a few decades ago was Alhaji Abubakar Tafawa Balewa.

Are today’s Christians the seed of Isaac or the seed of Ishmael? It all depends. Don’t be too quick to generalise and say it is Isaac. The promise was Isaac but many have ended up with Ishmael and are reconciled to Ishmael: “It is not that the word of God has taken no effect. Paul Bulus Z, Ambassador Ayodele Oke, Alhaji. Aliyu Ismaila, Ambassador. A.A. Musa, Ambassador. G.B. Igali, Aliyu Yahaya Gusau, Dr. Mahmud Mohammed, Pastor Tunde Bakare, Ismaila Isa Funtua, Mr. Femi Adesina and Dr. Suhayb Sanusi Rafindadi. Each chosen for their expertise and tasked to make use of the visit to drum up business and economic partnership with Nigeria.

At the end of their meeting last Wednesday in Abuja, state governors resolved to hold discussions with President Muhammadu Buhari to seek lasting solutions to the worsening macroeconomic challenges confronting the nation.

A certain inmate who supervised Abacha’s security left a mark in the prison by catering for inmates and warders. He rebuilt the tennis court and hired counsels for some inmates. He dispensed cash and succor to all, and he , in return, acquired uncommon privileges. In a prison where everything has a price tag, rich inmates receive visitors in the offices of very senior prison officials. And are generally specially catered for by warders and fellow inmates.

The book inside us. Many of us believe we have at least one creative book inside us and would love to have a published book to our name. It is one of the reasons, if I must be honest, I took to journalism. It is also one of the reasons I believe that many journalists all over the world, take to the pen profession. Journalism, for us, is a sort of half-way house which is supposed to satisfy the hunger for the written word while preparing us for that one book that will catapult us to the literary hall of fame. And for that, we are prepared to suffer the poor pay and inhuman working hours that journalism offers.

President Muhammadu Buhari’s four days official visit to the United States on the invitation of Washington, as a continuation of the sweet romance with the western powers, got to a crescendo last Monday when he held a parley with President Barack Obama in the Oval office of the White House.
