WHEN my good friend, Bayo Fabiyi said the statue of Chief Obafemi Awolowo recently unveiled by the governor of Lagos State, Mr. Akinwumi Ambode, looks more like the chairman of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Chief John Oyegun; I had to get to the site at the beginning of Lateef Jakande Road in Ikeja Area of Lagos.

I SPENT my Independence Day Anniversary quietly in our federal capital of Abuja.  The city wore a rather world-weary, mournful look.  The address by President Muhammadu Buhari, was, in my view, appropriately solemn.

AS Minister of Defense between 1960 and 1965, Alhaji Muhammadu Ribadu (1910-1965), from Balala in the present Adamawa state took two major decisions—one controversial and the other non-controversial in his Nigerianisation agenda of the Nigerian Army. Let us treat the controversial one first.

‘BETTER late than never” remains the word of wisdom when a measure long delayed had caused immeasurable damages to a nation until it can no longer be avoided. For too long and out of fear of a small minority of selfish individuals calling themselves Labour Unions, governments continued to operate commercial enterprises long after it had become glaring to all other stakeholders that governments are incapable of running businesses successfully.

THIS article was first published in June 2006 and republished, annually, since then on the Anniversaries of Democracy and Independence Days; but, its content has become increasingly relevant this year. Hopefully, this will once more represented as a wakeup call to abort the inevitable dire consequences which will jeopardize our relationship as a nation and thereby forestall an inevitable frustration of the hope of our people for a better life.
