The British mail newspaper ran a center page about the Winners’ Chapel. The head of the ministries, David Oyedepo, has an estimated £93 million fortune, a fleet of private jets and a Rolls-Royce Phantom. The church has been accused of cynical exploitation with £16.7 million in donations and followers are told that God would give them riches in return.

Living under constituted authority presupposes that there would be laws put in place to protect and defend an acceptable standard and way of life. The laws would require everyone to obey the rules that govern society and there would be a recourse to an established arm of the same law to enforce its statutes and punish those who break the law.

Sometimes, when certain things occur and people react in a certain way, I wonder if it’s peculiar to us as Nigerians, or if it’s just basic human nature period. Four students lose their lives; and that is just one incidence, one drop in the recent flood of such events; in the most gruesome way conceivable…

The swift way the perpetrators of the ‘face book’ murder of Cynthia Osokogu were brought to book, brought huge relief to all of us, and, if truth be told, more than a little pride. But more importantly, it brought closure and allowed the friends and family of the poor lady and to some extent, the larger society, to also have closure and move on with their lives. That is how it should be. A crime is committed, the perpetrators are apprehended, justice is done, the society learns from it, and moves on.

It is no longer news that Olusegun Mimiko was returned as the Ondo State governor in the recent election. That fact was released after the votes had all been cast, counted and collated to the satisfaction of INEC (Independent National Electoral Commission), the official institution invested with the authority to conduct the polls.That was when it became certain that the incumbent governor had been returned by the people of the state whom he had striven to serve for the past four years. That is what elections are for.
