At which stage in a man’s life is it okay to give up or perhaps give in? Considering I am regarded by most as a hopeless optimist, it’s a negative question to even contemplate. So maybe I should rephrase the question. When will the past stop influencing the present? And at what point should one throw in the towel and accept that the past is a yoke the present always has to carry? Most Christians celebrate their rebirth once they give their lives to Christ; it’s a new beginning; old things are passed away (supposedly).

It was almost nineteen years ago when my first article appeared on the pages of the Sunday Vanguard. But, even before that first one came out, a policy decision had been made about this page. Because the Federal Government looms so large and the states are, by comparison, midgets, the focus will be on issues which are federal or national in scope – with only occasional stop-over to address state or local matters.

You know how they say; East, West, home is best? Right. Well, I haven’t been to Nigeria for close to 25 years now so, where do I call home? I have always felt that Nigeria is my home but, my son came up with a happy medium that home, is where your family is. So I guess it is the UK because that is where my family and my heart is. When push comes to shove, though, I am a Nigerian born in the UK. I will always carry Nigeria with me, and I let people know that from the onset. Why haven’t I been home? And why that long? I don’t know, it just happened.

I cannot remember precisely when the affair started but we had been hearing several versions of the story as rumours before the woman’s husband finally visited our compound. We lived in a big family compound. The land, having been bought by the eldest of four brothers. The four brothers had built a house each on the land, making it a family compound.

It has been a long way from the 1950s when politics was forced on the best of any community (when the best educated were begged to represent the people) to the present time when any candidate (with minimum of a school certificate) would force himself on the people as their representative.

They played some good passing game but were caught up with what you may now permit me to tag a disease in Eagles. This disease has been in the team for long, dating back to the days of Amodu Shaibu, Berti Vogts, Lagerback, Siasia and it even appears more prominent now. It is a disease that kills many of the attacking moves of the team.
