President Muhammadu Buhari on Sunday shifted the military ceremonies of the National Independence Day to Maiduguri, Borno State, with fresh warning to separatists and a clarion call on soldiers to defend Nigeria’s integrity.

President Muhammadu Buhari devoted part of the 57th Independence anniversary speech to remind campaigners for the dismemberment of Nigeria of the horrendous experience  of Nigeria’s civil war between 1967 and 1970.

Fairness and professional obligation demands that we hear the other party in a situation of conflict and disagreement, and so I intend to do precisely that this week, in response to the developing scenarios between the Buhari administration and the Biafran separatist agitators, the IPOB, which it has labelled a “terrorist organization.”

President Muhammadu Buhari, this morning, acknowledged that calls for the restructuring of Nigeria are “quite proper in a legitimate debate”but noted that the situation “has let in highly irresponsible groups to call for the dismemberment of the country.”
