The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Benin Zone, on Monday urged the Federal Government to urgently revisit and renegotiate its 2009 agreement with the union to avert a looming crisis in the nation’s universities.

The Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, has retracted his earlier claim that no binding agreement existed between the Federal Government and the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), admitting that a formal agreement was indeed signed in 2009.

Forty-eight hours after members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) staged nationwide protests over their welfare, the Owerri Zone of the union has demanded the immediate payment of the withheld three and a half months’ salaries of its members, insisting that “the labourer deserves his wage.”
