Public expectation for adequate and stable power supply may have been heightened when President Goodluck Jonathan handed over share certificates to the private investors in five generation companies (GENCOs) and 10 distribution companies (DISCOs) created from the unbundled Power Holding Company of Nigeria (PHCN).

Before last week end, I told one of my colleagues that in all the years I have associated with football, I have never come across a situation where, in any league in the world, over ten teams were available for the drop with just one match to spare.

Independent Nigeria was meant to be a country of unity in spite of diversity. It was supposed to be a country where, “though tribes and tongue may differ in brotherhood we stand” as our former National Anthem posited. The earliest political parties formed in the Lagos area, including the Nigerian National Development Party, NNDP, the Nigerian Youth Movement, NYM and the National Council for Nigerian and the Cameroons, NCNC, all had the same vision of an independent Nigeria united by a strong common bond of citizenship.

I like Stella Oduah. Her fierce feline eyes – those bold saucers by which we enter into her soul –leaves one in no doubt that she is a force of nature. It is not for nothing that she is considered one of the most powerful ministers in the Jonathan administration. As minister for Aviation, she has certainly taken very bold steps; made tough and demanding decisions, and accomplished quite some visible milestones.

It is no longer news that academic activities in public universities in Nigeria have been paralysed in the last 4 months as a result of the industrial action embarked upon by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU). With the adverse impact the strike has had on the nation, emotions have taken over and many people are now pleading with the Union to have pity on their suffering students and suspend the strike. Of course, we are all free to favour peace in our campuses but there are a few immediate issues to be noted.
