The courts as gambling houses
Once upon a time in this country, election petitions were settled within the two-month intervals between the polls and swearing-in of elected officials. For instance, the staggered elections of 1979 culminated in the presidential poll on August 11, 1979.
The Supreme Court And the Nigeria’s Election Industry….
’Under the PDP the only thriving industry in Nigeria is Elections. Local Government Elections, State Elections and Federal Government elections are run through the years and most of those processes are never concluded. Most of the brilliant legal luminaries rotate from one court to the other, prosecuting or defending election petitions. The Judiciary have abandoned criminal cases and millions are in prisons awaiting trials.
The conceptual status of the phrased- failed State
LEXICAL globalization can be likened to the spread of virus in the operating systems of computers. Like harmattan, it windlessly spreads. Ask the road side mechanic- “wetin dey happen†he promptly replies “economic meltdown niâ€. Ask him what economic meltdown is- he has no clue.
Where’s the truth of official claims?
I’d begun and nearly finished the article before unforeseen circumstances led to my changing course and choosing to take stock of certain developments in our polity in the course of the year. I’d tried to avoid this because doing it would mean commenting on the bleak picture our country presents at this time of the year in the last few years. Past editions of TALKINGPOINT written about this time of the year would bear out my claim.
How much can you tell your spouse?(2)
If you tell her from the beginning, she might even discourage you from doing the business, especially, considering the risk or the amount of money involved. Many woman are not that bold when it comes to risks.
Glo as metaphor
Globacom’s contract runs out on December 8, but they have the right of first refusal, so we have written to them to offer the Eagles and other national teams at individual values.
NESG, INSINCERITY AND THE ECONOMY
The Nigerian Economic Summit Group (NESG) concluded its 15th Annual Summit last week in Abuja. As is the custom, the heavy weights of industry and commerce and other representatives of the major stakeholders in the Nigerian economy and public sector were well represented.
Achebe coloquium: The irrelevance of Nigeria-America relations
I WAS not at the Chinua Achebe colloquium which took place last week in Rhode Island. But while it was going on in Providence, I was myself at a party in the St. Louis home of the economist, Dr. Remi Onwumere with Dr. Sylvester Ugoh, Harvard-trained economist and Nigerian politician.
How much can you tell your spouse?
In the case of sudden death, which can go either way, it could be you or him, everything depends on God. Whatever I have as my personal savings is what I plan to fall back on in case of any accidental eventualities. You need to see what widows go through in some cultures to know just a little of what I am talking about. Once a man dies, it is assumed that the wife must have something to do with it because she has something to gain from his death.
The uselessness of Christmas
In this essay, I argue that Christmas has become a useless social fad which should be allowed to die out because it has progressively degenerated into a period for indulging and celebrating the grossest attributes of the human species – greed, avarice, licentious living, debauchery and spiritual self-abnegation.
They prefer to milk the cow
The structures we have would win for us a gold medal if having them was all that was needed to judge them. America does not even have them – huge cars and convoys for public officers and their dependants; full time pay for all cadres of public officers for no jobs done; billions sunk into buying aircraft for use of heads of the organs of government.
The right level (2)
For those who enjoy arguments, I am sure they will bring up the argument of one man who was believed to be an heretic when he thought the earth was round while others thought it was flat. I am not discussing basics of science or earth shaking theories in evolution or even technology, what I am concerned with is the fact that a lot of people are depressed and lonely.
Judiciary and corruption (2)
James Ibori’s case which has been turned into a charade can serve as proxy for others pending in the courts. This particular case has demonstrated, as no other, how those expensive lawyers, Senior Advocates of Nigeria, SAN, and judges have conspired to delay justice. Granted, the great Dr Samuel Johnson, 1709-1784, had pronounced that, “A lawyer has no business with the justice or injustice of the cause which he undertakesâ€.
Marriage is a powerful covenant
Is there any way that we women can ‘corner’ this weeks article and prevent the men from reading it since we have all discovered this column has most men’s favorite column. This week, I really want to address women.
Merry Christmas – to you & three others
It is somewhat curious that the initial stages of the project attracted attention in the facelift they afforded the waterfront of the city, the Marina. The natives call that part of Lagos, “Ehin’gbeti’, and follow it up with the popular saw, “B’oju o ba ti Ehin’gbeti, oju o ni t’Ekoâ€.
