THE Federal Government, Friday, commissioned GT 18, a unit generating 130 mega watts in Delta IV, in the Ughelli Power PLC, assuring Nigerians of improved power supply before the end of the year.
Commissioning the unit, the Minister of Power, Prof Barth Nnaji said government was working hard towards achieving stable supply of power in the country, adding that government was doing everything to support the Ughelli power plant.
Congratulating the Chief Executive Officer of the Ughelli Power Plc, who was going on retirement, Nnanji who was dazed on arrival with a serious protest from workers of the Power Holding Company of Nigeria, PHCN from the Edo/Delta zone, said privatization of the company was not meant to undo the workers.
He insisted that privatization of the power sector would pave way for better supply of power in the country.
According to him, workers should not be threatened by the move to privatize the sector.
Earlier in his address, the Chief Executive Officer of the Power plant, Engr O.A Udeh said the station would produce additional 200mw before the end of the year.
He said, “Our expectation is that GT 16 will return to service in October while GT 17 returns to service in November 2012.”
According to Udeh, “GT 18 that is being officially commissioned is the biggest contributor.
“The other units are GTs 8 and 12, Hithachi 25 gas turbine generators, contributing 15MW each,” adding; “as at today we have available generating capacity of 360MW from seven units.”
“Holding that the GT 18 came back to service in July, 2012, he said the power plant was generating 230MW from four units when he took over as the Chief Executive Officer some months ago.”
