CALABAR— THOUSANDS of civil and public servants in Cross River State, yesterday, took to the streets to protest what they called undue delay in the release of the Environmental Impact Assessment Report for the construction of a super highway in the state.

The workers under the aegis of Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC and Trade Union Congress, TUC,  were led by John Ushie, state Chairman of NLC and Clarkson Otu, of TUC, as they chanted songs and waved placards carrying messages, such as “Cross River  workers are behind Ayade on the construction of superhighway,”  “Nobody should scuttle the super highway project,” “Buhari remember your promise on superhighway,” “Enemies of progress cannot stop superhighway.” They  marched round major streets in Calabar.

The workers who assembled at the Botanical Garden on Mary Slessor Avenue as early as 8a.m.,  marched to the Federal Secretariat where they delivered a letter to the state Director in the Federal Ministry of Environment for onward transmission to the Minster for Environment and also went  to the Governor’s Office to deliver same to the governor to take to the President to appeal for a speedy release of the EIA report.
