How six Catholic seminarians died in auto crash
It was a dark day last Monday for the entire Vincentian community of the Catholic Church as they were thrown into mourning as six philosophy seminarians of the congregation died in a motor accident with eleven others sustaining various degree of injuries. The Vincentian philosophy students were travelling from Ikot-Ekpene, Akwa-Ibom State to attend a compulsory human development programme scheduled at Enugu. But unfortunately, this could not be as one of the two 16-seater buses conveying them had a burst tyre at Otu-Ozara just a few kilometers away to their destination.

THE Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, yesterday, told an Abuja High Court sitting at Maitama, that the National Publicity Secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Chief Olisa Metuh, destroyed his “confessional statement” upon realizing that it directly linked former President Goodluck Jonathan to the alleged illegal diversion of funds meant for the procurement of arms.

Following a breakdown of negotiations between the leadership of the Senate and the Federal Government over the 45 per cent increase, the Senate a few days ago stopped the implementation of the new electricity tariffs expected to take off on February 1. In the same vein, a Federal High Court in Lagos also ruled that going ahead with the implementation would amount to contempt. This was as a result of public outcry that greeted the announcement of the increase. The Labour unions had held mass protests across the country recently to register their displeasure over the new electricity tariffs, shutting down major cities including Abuja for several hours. The argument of the indigenous companies managing the distribution of electricity was that the hike would guarantee steady supply of electricity. Previous hike in the past never translated into stable power.
