Lagos – The University of Lagos on Tuesday carted home N800,000 after winning the men and women volleyball events at the 3rd Lagos Inter-Tertiary Institutions Games.
To emerge as champions, the men’s team defeated the defending champions, the Nigeria Army School of Finance and Administration in three straight sets of 26-24, 25-16 and 25-23.
The Army Finance and Administration, which placed second, took home N230,000 while the third placed Yaba College of Technology (YABATECH) won a consoling, N120,000.
Unilag’s women team defending champions in the past two editions, retained their title, after defeating Yabatech (women) in three straight sets, 25-11, 25-11 and 25-9.
The women champions settled for N400, 000,while the second and third placed Yabatech and Lagos State Polytechnic (Laspotech) received N230, 000 and N120, 000 respectively.
Chidima Ibeh, a female player from Unilag, told NAN that hard work gave them the victory.
“The secret behind our success is our dedication to the game. Our coach is the best you can ever think of in the sport,” Ibeh added.
Anuoluwapo Ihimekpen, a Unilag setter, also said they had better skills to those of their opponents and had the best setter.
“We enjoy good communication within our team. “We had better setter and we understood one another, even without looking at each other,” she said.
Deji Fayomi, of Unilag volleyball team, said: “I am happy that my team defeated the defending champions.
“We had better tactical strategy. The game was not all about strength but ability to reason,” he said. (NAN)
