President Bola Tinubu on Monday described his administration’s resolve to reform the Nigeria Police Force and enhance security across Nigeria as unwavering.

“It is our responsibility to be each other’s keepers and ensure that there is equity and the maintenance of issues provided by the various governments.”

The Vice President, Kashim Shettima has said that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration is committed to reform the Police Force and enhance security to achieve a safer and more secured Nigeria for the well being of citizens.

The Speaker of House of Representatives, Rep. Tajudeen Abbas, on Monday urged stakeholders to provide a framework that would dispel the fear of abuse of state police by governors.

“There are governors in Nigeria that will turn state police into an instrument of oppression because even right now, the federal police is turned into an instrument of oppression.”

State Police appears to be on the way to becoming a reality after President Bola Tinubu and state governors agreed to work on the modalities to establish it.

The powers vested on governors to appoint commissioners of police, CPs, in their states by the proposed bill on state police have been greeted by mixed feelings by civil society organizations, CSOs.

“My concern about state police, and it is not like I am against it; I am all for it but my biggest concern about state police is funding the state police.”

“The state police matter can best be handled by the National Assembly and not the National Economic Council or the National Security Adviser”

Only 16 of the 36 states of the federation and Federal Capital Territory, FCT, have submitted reports on the proposed establishment of state police, in view of the security situation in the country, the National Economic Council, NEC, said yesterday.

“One Senator will be going around with 10 policemen, seven, members of House of Reps, everybody. That is for those who are mobile. Some even give security to their wives, others give security to their children. I am against that.”

The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has said that the unanimous demand for state police by the governors is evidence that Nigerians are not interested in the country again.

“I am an advocate for it. I believe we needed it like yesterday. And the interesting thing is that we have the Neighborhood Watch and it is still functional, about 6,000 of them. The good news is that I have given approval for us to recruit additional 4,000 of them. And this is job for our youths, our able-bodied men.”
