The National Association of Nigerian Students, NANS, is once again in the news, but this time for what many critics deem as all the wrong reasons. The umbrella body of university students in Nigeria is presently embroiled in a crisis that seriously threatens its existence. Though with a long history of activism based on students solidarity against the excesses of constituted authorities on campuses and the society at large, NANS appears to be tottering on a precipice of relevance as it continues to unravel due to certain prevailing circumstances.

The Federal Government says it will continue negotiation process with the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) on Monday to resolve ongoing industrial action embarked by the striking lecturers.

Ado-Ekiti-The founder Afe Babalola University, Ado-Ekiti, Aare Afe, Babalola(SAN), has thrown his weight behind the ongoing nationwide industrial action by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).

Some undergraduate students in Nsukka, on Thursday appealed to the Federal Government (FG) and the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) to shift grounds in order to resolve their issues.

THE National Association of Nigerian Students,NANS, said Sunday that its patience following the strike in the nation’s public universities,had been overstretched.

Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project has sent an urgent appeal to two UN special rapporteurs urging them to “prevail upon the government of President Muhammadu Buhari and the leadership of Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) to reach an agreement to end the ongoing strike action by ASUU, which continues to have real and dire consequences on the right to higher education, specifically university education, as guaranteed by the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights, to which Nigeria is a state party.”

THE Academic Staff Union of Universities, Lagos State University, Ojo, ASUU-LASU has alleged that the institution since 2009 has not paid the earned academic allowances, EAA, that amounted to N530 million wage bill; N450 million monthly subvention and N80 million level of supplementation by university. In a release made available to Vanguard, Dr Tony Dansu, secretary, ASUU-LASU and Comrade Dr Adeolu   Oyekan noted that despite LASU being among state universities that got much from its visitors, it has paid zero of its earned academic allowance to the staff.
