The International Women’s Skill Center recently celebrated the graduation ceremony of 112 students. Friends and families gathered to celebrate these women who successfully completed their programmes in Computer Literacy, Catering and Events Management, Hair dressing and Salon Services, Sewing and Fashion Design, Adult Literacy and Computer Literacy Departments.

Expectant mothers in Lagos State have been advised to always attend ante-natal sessions and to cultivate good personal hygiene during pregnancy and after delivery. The advice came from the wife of the Lagos State governor, Mrs. Bolanle Ambode, when her foundation, Hope for Women in Nigeria Initiative, HOFOWEM, distributed gift items to 230 expectant mothers in Alausa, Ikeja.

EXPERTS have called on Nigerians to shun the culture of early marriage and child bride as it leads to future psychiatric issues. The call was made at the ordinary general meeting and scientific conference of the ARD, FNPH held recently as Yaba, Lagos The theme of the event which had an interactive session with members of invited secondary schools, practitioners and guest speakers was child marriages, the psychiatric consequences, and sub-theme of the media and psychiatry, proper reporting practices for mental illnesses.

HON. Elisha Attai, one of a new crop of men championing women causes, has unveiled the theme of the African Women in Leadership Organization(AWLO) Global Conference in Virginia this month. AWLO , an energetic non- profit organization championing the cause of women empowerment, gender parity, and the advancement of women in leadership; has also lined up a number of activities for the coming year.

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) and the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) acknowledged the impact being made by the global organisation Mercy Corps and MasterCard, highlighting the role of the National eID (NeID) card in empowering 18,000 women and girls in the northern part of Nigeria. Mercy Corps is a global organization that empowers people around the world including Nigeria, funded by the British Department for International Development (DFID) which came into the country in 2013.

EXCITING moments working in Nigeria?My years in Nigeria, particu larly Lagos has been exciting and when I got
here, I found it was a lot of fun and I loved it. We did so many exciting things with the former US Consul-General, Jeffery Hawkins. He had big dreams and it has been a credible assignment. My first assignment in the Foreign Service was in Abuja and my last assignment in Lagos, so I feel like it was meant to be and I would not have changed that for anything else, because it’s been wonderful.

THE International Widows Day has come and gone but will continue to linger in the memory of 1, 500 widows in the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, Abuja and its environs as they were recipients of various start-up packs for setting up small businesses. This amazing gesture came from a well-spirited non-governmental organisation, the Rock of Ages Empowerment Foundation, RAEF, whose passion is to ensure encouragement and joy returns to the down trodden in the society.
