BENIN — MEMBERS of Edo State chapter of National Council of Women’s Societies, NCWS, yesterday marched through some major streets in Benin, Edo State, decrying recent killings in the state in particular and the nation in general.

The women were also at the Edo State House of Assembly and Government House, where they had audience with the Speaker and government officials.

The women, led by the state president of NCWS, Mrs. Omoluru Enije, said they had watched with dismay and concern the wanton killings and maiming of innocent Nigerians throughout the country and called for peace.

The women, who said they endorsed peaceful co-existence, tolerance and adherence to due process in electoral matters, added that they were strongly opposed to violence, extra-judicial killings and destruction of lives and property.

According to Mrs. Enije, who spoke with journalists at the premises of Nigeria Union of Journalists: “In the Northern part of Nigeria, terrorism occasioned by the ‘Boko Haram’ sect is ravaging the cities, killing and maiming innocent people in their hundreds daily and nothing seems to be done. Women are made widows everyday and children turned orphans.

“The issue of insecurity had reached an alarming rate and become worrisome.”
