Guinea will be tough, Disu warns

BY JACOB AJOM
Former coach of the national team Tunde Disu has predicted that this weekend’s Africa Cup of Nations qualifier between Nigeria and Guinea would be tough for both sides but sounded confident that the Super Eagles would prevail over their West African rivals.

Speaking in Lagos Tuesday, Disu who is the technical director of the

Lagos Junior League said that the Super Eagles should expect a “very tight Guinean side with top class professionals who would also want to make a statement.”

The coach who led Nigeria U-20 side to a dramatic win over the former Soviet Union at the Saudi ’89 FIFA Junior World Cup, as it was then called, said, “Siasia must concentrate on the central defence because I believe the Guineans would want to attack, attack and attack. The central defence must be up and doing,” he cautioned.

Disu advised that the pair of Joel Obi and Mikel Obi should be given distinct roles to play in the midfield. “I know, the Inter boy, Joel is attacking conscious, he should be called up to help the attack while Mikel who is good in organizing the rear be told to enough cover for the defence. He is very good at that.”

Disu would love to see Locomotive Moscow summer signing, Obinna Nsofor lead the attack. “With Nsofor spearheading the attack and getting enough support from the likes of Osaze and Ogbuke, the Eagles can fly,” Disu reasoned.

He said the most important thing is for the Eagles to score goals and the job should not be left alone for the attackers.

“In modern football, central defenders score a lot of goals. Yobo for instance can assist the attack once in a while. Chelsea’s captain (John Terry), a defender, sometimes scores. Everybody in the team must rise to the occasion.”
