CPC urges police to probe release of alleged ballot papers snatcher

Katsina -The Congress for Progressive Change (CPC) in Katsina state has urged the new state police commissioner, Mr Ibrahim Mohammed, to investigate the release of one Hamisu Gyarta.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Gyarta was alleged to have snatched ballot papers, Saturday in Mashi local government area of the state.

Gyarta, an ex-councillor, was alleged to have snatched ballot papers from the INEC supervisor at Doguro Ward ‘A’ polling unit during the aborted Senate and House of Representatives elections.

The party’s chairman, Dr Yusha’u Armaya’u, while addressing a news conference in Katsina on Sunday said the investigation was necessary.

“This is in order to bring all those who are behind the release of the suspect from detention without trial to book.

“We learnt that after the arrest of Gyarta, the DPO for Mashi took him to Daura, only for him to be transferred to Katsina where they eventually released him without facing trial”, he said.

Armaya’u said  the party was ready to do everything within the ambit of the law to ensure that the suspect and all those behind his release did not go scot free.

When contacted, the state Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), ASP Abubakar Ibrahim, confirmed the incident and arrest of Gyarta.

He however denied the allegation that the police had released the suspect saying he was still in police custody.

Ibrahim said the suspect would be charged to court as soon as the police concluded its  investigation.
