AKURE—THE former Works Commissioner in Ondo State, Mr Yele Omogunwa, has decamped to the opposition Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, citing alleged lack of internal democracy in the ruling Labour Party, LP, in the State.

Omogunwa in August this year resigned his appointment as a Commissioner in the state to contest for the Senatorial seat in the Northern part of the state.

Addressing newsmen  yesterday,  the former Commissioner said he decided to join the opposition as “an ordinary member because the LP lacks internal democracy.”

The former commissioner left the PDP in 2006 with the state governor, Dr Olusegun Mimiko for the LP only for him to decamp again.

Omogunwa who was expected to contest the LP primaries with the former Special Adviser to the Governor on Political Matter Mr. Boluwaji Kunlere,  alleged that the governor and the leaders of the party had preference for Kunlere.

But in swift reaction,  his former colleague in the state Executive Council who is the Information Commissioner Ranti Akerele said “Omogunwa might not have been talking of the LP that they all belonged to.

Akerele said he should have waited for the primaries of the party to be conducted before going the public and complaining about internal democracy.

The commissioner, who said he was speaking as a card carrying member of LP, however said Omogunwa was only looking for excuses for his defection to the PDP.

But Omogunwa said he resigned from the party because “there are obvious sign that there would not any level playing ground to contest the primaries.

“I resigned from the party (LP) two weeks ago and I have settled for the PDP as a member as it was obvious that I can no longer pursue my ambition in LP because there is no level playing ground, I have decided to cut it short with them as democracy cannot thrive in such setting.

“There would not be justice, fair play and equity in the party primaries the way politics is been played in the LP
