ABUJA – The United Bank for Africa (UBA) has been recognized by the National Assembly with a Disability-Friendly Award for its exceptional efforts in providing accessible banking services to people with disabilities, particularly the visually impaired.

The award was presented in Abuja by Hon. Bashiru Dawodu, Chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on Disability.

During the presentation, Dawodu commended UBA for its inclusive initiatives, stating, “The United Bank for Africa is specifically recognized for its outstanding performance on disability affairs, especially for the visually impaired.

“This committee serves as a central hub for persons with disabilities. When we called for nominations of organizations or agencies supporting this community, UBA stood out. Those who nominated UBA highlighted its exceptional efforts in addressing the needs of the visually impaired in banking.”

Responding to the honor, UBA’s Executive Director (North), Alex Alozie, expressed gratitude to the National Assembly. Accompanied by Ms. May Ikhile, Manager of UBA’s National Assembly branch, Alozie reaffirmed the bank’s commitment to fostering inclusivity.

“We deeply appreciate this recognition by the House of Representatives,” Alozie said. “We are not yet at the promised land, but we are on the right path, and we will continue to strive for more progress.”

Explaining UBA’s prioritization of disability inclusion, Alozie added, “Disability is an area many corporate organizations overlook. As a socially responsible institution, we believe in giving back to society, and we identified this as an often-neglected area.

“For example, we introduced account-opening forms specifically designed for the visually impaired, which was no small feat. These forms have been distributed across Nigeria, and many visually impaired individuals have successfully opened accounts with UBA in all states.”

The recognition underscores UBA’s leadership in promoting disability-friendly banking services, setting an example for other organizations.

The National Assembly’s acknowledgment highlights the importance of inclusivity in corporate practices and the vital role organizations play in creating a society where everyone can thrive.
