As a result of the crisis, millions of people have migrated to other countries as refugees in pursuit of protection.

Nations like Germany, Iran, Uganda, and Turkey, have opened their borders to accommodate these individuals seeking refuge to escape from conflict.

According to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), there were approximately 3.4 million refugees only in Iran.

Here are the top 10 countries that receive the most refugees

Iran

There are now about 3,443,522 refugees living inside Iran’s borders, primarily from nations like Afghanistan, Iraq, Syria, and others where instability and conflict have compelled many people to leave their homeland.

Turkey

Due to the horrific civil conflict that started in 2011, Turkey has also been a major destination for refugees, with almost 3,368,976 coming from Syria in particular. In addition, Turkey is home to refugees from Iraq, Afghanistan, and other countries.

Germany

Germany opened its borders to refugees following the 2015 European migration crisis. Particularly those from Syria, Afghanistan, and Iraq, where there are currently about 2,509,506 refugees living.

Germany’s membership in the European Union and its adherence to the 1951 Refugee Convention have also had an impact on the country’s refugee population, with substantial assistance from both domestic and EU resources to facilitate the integration process.

Pakistan

The majority of Pakistan’s 2,080,501 refugees are Afghans who fled their country due to decades of conflict, including the Soviet invasion, the rise of the Taliban, and more recent unrest that followed the U.S. withdrawal in 2021.

The government has cooperated with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) and other international organizations to offer necessities, healthcare, and education.

Uganda

Uganda has more than 1,512,681 refugees who are escaping conflict, bloodshed, and political instability mostly from South Sudan, the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), and Burundi. 

Russia

Nearly 1.3 million refugees from Ukraine, Afghanistan, and various regions of the Caucasus and Central Asia were living in Russia as of December 31, 2023. The majority of Russia’s refugees are those escaping the effects of war, political instability, or extreme poverty.

Poland

Poland has nearly 989,877 refugees most of which are millions of Ukrainian refugees since Russia invaded Ukraine in early 2022, providing them with immediate shelter as well as access to jobs, healthcare, and education.

Bangladesh

There are now about 961,801 refugees in Bangladesh, mostly from Myanmar. Most of these refugees are Rohingya Muslims who have escaped human rights violations, violence, and persecution in Rakhine State, Myanmar.

Sudan

Sudan has an estimated 926,433 refugees escaping conflict and instability in neighboring regions, and due to the civil conflict that started in 2013, South Sudan has the highest number of refugees in Sudan, although it also takes in refugees from nations like Ethiopia and Eritrea.

Ethiopia

About 921,822 refugees are living in Ethiopia. The nation has historically served as a place of refuge for individuals from nearby nations that have endured conflict and humanitarian disasters, including South Sudan, Eritrea, and Somalia.
