IWD: 1,000 women benefits Perxels’ free UI/UX design master class

Over a thousand women across Nigeria have benefited from a free UI/UX Design Master class organised by Perxels Design School as part of its commitment to inspire inclusion in the tech industry and celebrate International Women’s Day (IWD).

Speaking at the hybrid event which had women both offline and virtually via live stream, the Executive Director, Perxels Design School, Abiodun Fiwa, said: “The master class centered on UIUX design was to equip participants with the foundational knowledge and practical skills they need to thrive in this ever-evolving field. From screen layout design to interface design principles to the practical use of Figma, popular design software, the master class covered everything a budding UIUX designer needs to get started.”

Highlighting the economic significance of the training, Fiwa said: “Equipping women with in-demand UIUX design skills is not just about personal growth; it has a significant economic impact. By providing free training, we are fostering a pipeline of talented female designers who can contribute their creativity and expertise to the booming design industry. This translates to a more diverse workforce, innovative solutions, and ultimately, a stronger economy.”

She further explained that the inspiration for this initiative stemmed from a simple yet powerful belief: women deserve a seat at the table in the design world. We often see a lack of female representation in this field, and Perxels is committed to changing that narrative. By offering free training and mentorship opportunities, we are not just celebrating International Women’s Day; we are actively fostering an inclusive and diverse design community.”

According to the Director of Academics Tolu Oluyole, “To ensure this initiative truly empowered women, we partnered with prominent senior designers. Through their reputation and consistency in the industry, we were able to offer free spots in the master class to over 15 up-and-coming female designers each from the influencers. Some of the senior designers we partnered with are: Ajayi Akintomiwa, Bolutife Awakan, Adesewa Adebayo, Rukayat Yaro, Fortune Nabhel Harmony and Ufot Ubon.”

“This selection process was based on a combination of factors, including a passion for design, a demonstrated interest in UIUX, and the potential to benefit from the learning experience.”

“The IWD master class was just the beginning of the journey for our sponsored students. They participated in a week-long intensive program following the master class, where they received comprehensive lectures, tackled design challenges, and received valuable feedback from industry professionals. This immersive learning experience allowed them to solidify their understanding and translate theory into practice,” he added.
