Coach tasks handball federation on standards

Mohammed Bala, Head Coach of the male and female Federal Road Safety Corps Handball teams, has advised the Federation of Nigeria (HFN) to improve the standards of the Prudent Energy Handball Premier League.

Bala told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Monday in Lagos that the league matches should be played indoors as obtainable in some other countries.

He said that the 2018 HFN second phase of the Prudent Energy Handball Premier League which took place in courts of Row Park Sports, Yaba, Lagos, was not easy for players.

“Matches should be indoors this year because it was not a palatable situation in Lagos last year, the surface in the open court was not friendly at all.

“The HFN needs to improve by bringing coaching and officiating skills up to date,’’ he said.

He said that the league was a standard competition, urging that the federation should ensure a favourable playing environment.

He noted that the players were professionals in standard clubs.

Bala said that the revived league had gone a long way to promote the development of the sport and bring clubs in the country together.

“A good number of the players in the participating clubs are world-class and have participated in continental and intercontinental games; so they should be provided with a similar environment,’’ he urged.

The second edition of the first phase of the 2019 annual HFN-organised Prudent Energy Handball Premier League will hold in Abuja from May 6 to May 19. (NAN)
