THE All Progressives Congress, APC has expressed fears over the neutrality of the Delta State Independent Electoral Commission, DESIEC, stressing that the way and manner the commission was assembled by the People’s Democratic Party, PDP-led administration of Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa calls for concern.
Publicity Secretary of the party in the state, Leonard Obibi said that based on experience with previous elections within and outside Delta State, the independence of electoral commissions shows that opposition political parties have enough reason to doubt the neutrality of the electoral commission.
He said: “In some of these matters, experience is a very good guide and it has shown that in many of the states, the supposedly independent electoral commissions are in contrast, not really independent.”
Noting recurring cases of manipulation of elections by state independent electoral commissions, he said that it is either materials do not get to the polling station on time or result sheets are not included among the electoral materials shipped to the polling centres.
“But the truth of the matter is that most state independent electoral bodies have not proved that they are above board in ensuring a level-playing field for all parties.”
He said the challenges would, however, not deter the APC in Delta State from putting its best in the forthcoming election.
“But that does not remove the fact that we on our own as a party are doing our own preparations for the elections and we are hoping to go into the elections and we would assess the performance of our own State Independent Electoral Commission.”
