Murder trial: Rivers CJ orders IG to arrest Prisons Comptrollers

By Davies Iheamnachor
PORT HARCOURT—Chief Judge of Rivers State, Justice Iyayi Lamikanra, yesterday, ordered the Inspector General of Police, Ibrahim Idris, to arrest the Comptroller of Federal Prisons and the Deputy Comptroller in charge of Port Harcourt Prisons, over their failure to produce the ex-Chairman of Asari-Toru Local Government Area, Ojukaye Amachree.

Amachree is facing a murder trial at the state High Court, following his alleged involvement in the killing of Mr. Smart Soberekom and the accused had been in prison for over five months.

It will be recalled that the court had given an order on three occasions instructing the Comptroller of Prisons to produce the accused in court.

At the resumed hearing and the absence of Amachree in court, Justice  Lamikanra stated that the Federal Comptroller should appear before the High Court in Port Harcourt to explain the reason he and the Deputy Comptroller should not be remanded in prison for disobeying the court order.

Lamikanra instructed the Assistant Inspector General of Police, AIG Zone 6, Mr. Abubakar Marafa, the Rivers State Commissioner of Police, Mobolaji Odesanya, the State Attorney General, Emma Aguma on notice to ensure compliance of the order.

The court also struck out a prayer by Rowland Otaro, counsel to  Flag-Amachree, seeking to dismiss the charges against his client for lack of merit.
