Vegeterian personalities in Africa (1)

By Hakeem Jimoh

One objective of this weekly column is to give protagonists of a healthy and Veg lifestyle a platform and also readers to know them. In Nigeria, promoting vegan and vegetarian diet is still in its infancy.

SharitaReason enough to look beyond our shores. Ghana for example has a quite vibrant Veg culture culminating in the World Veg Fest being held there next year. Dr. Sharita Yazid has been boldly advocating for a healthier lifestyle in Ghana now for years. Now she is reaching out to Nigeria – an opportunity to introduce her here.

Dr. Sharita is a naturopathic doctor from the U.S. specializing in Iridology, Reiki, Detoxification, nutritional programs, weight loss, herbal solutions, and wholistic (mind, body, and spirit) consultations. She is residing in Ghana as the CEO of New Body Products, LTD Ghana, originally established 1976 in Compton, California.

“As a child, I grew up in a household of wholistic healers, Dr. Paul Goss and Alzonia Goss. I have been vegetarian since the age of two with a little backsliding here and there. I suffered with chronic bronchitis which made it hard for me to function as a normal child.

As a result of eating vegetarian, taking herbal medicine, playing sports and dancing, I was able to control this ailment. I now have 6 healthy children and 1 grandchild of my own. I teach West African dance, maintain good health and I am 40 and fabulous.

Dr. Sharita has been helping people heal themselves through natural foods, herbal medicine, exercise, spirituality and meditation for over 25 years. “The body has a physical, mental and spiritual level and all three have to be addressed in order to bring the body back to its whole form”.

Growing up in her parent´s natural food store in a predominantly black community in America where there is a high risk of hypertension, diabetes, heart disease and depression she saw the need to continue her parents work of healing the community through wholistic methods.

Dr. Sharita learned iridology from her father Dr. Paul Goss, who is a world renowned master iridologist, and naturopath. She has used this method along with other modalities to identify the imbalances in one´s body to determine what programs to put her clients on.

In Nigeria, Dr. Sharita Yazid is collaborating with Veggie Victory – Nigeria’s 1st Vegan & Vegetarian Restaurant located at Freedom Park in Lagos Island. If you are interested in cooking classes or the expertise of Dr. Sharita Yazid, please send an email to: [email protected]

In next week’s column Dr. Sharita Yazid will elaborate on why a Veg diet is Africa’s Liberation diet. One of her amazing recipes is already available at Veggie Victory: the Nutty Chocolate Ghanache – a raw vegan iced truffle.
