…calls for 8 regions
BY GABRIEL ENOGHOLASE
BENIN—THE Esan people in Edo State have called for the restructuring of the country into eight functional, autonomous and competitive regions, noting that the Mid-West region has till date remained the only democratically created region in the country since 1963.
The regions, they said, can create other structures such as states and local governments as they deemed fit.
The regions, they added, should leverage on their human and natural endowments to keep their citizens engaged in productive ventures, retaining not less than 50 percent of their revenues and pay taxes to the centre for common services such as the Armed Forces, Customs/Immigration, common currency, Foreign Affairs and the Federal Supreme Court.
The Esan ethnic nationality frowned at the situation where most military hardware are kept in the Northern part of Nigeria and consequently advocated for the decentralisation of the military hardware among the proposed eight regions such that no region can intimidate others as a result of their proximity to military hardware.
These and others were arrived at weekend, during a meeting of Esan Traditional Rulers, Esan Elders Forum, Esan Professionals Ikolo Esan and Esan Youth Council of Nigeria at the palace of the Onojie of Opoji, Ehidiamen 1, in Esan Central Local Government Area of the state.
They also frowned at the expensive nature of the Presidential system of government as practiced today in Nigeria and advocated a return to part-time parliamentary system, which is less expensive, more transparent, accountable, and representative.
Besides, they advocated the decentralisation of the current Nigeria Police Force into regional and community policing because they are closer to the people, more friendlily and would be well- kitted, well trained and well oriented to prevent and prosecute crimes.
