THE all-new Range Rover L405 is unarguably one of the most powerful vehicles in its class and the first in class to be built on an all-aluminum monocoque structure platform resulting in weight reduction of about 420 kg when compared to its predecessor.
Land Rover also introduced an all-new Terrain Response on the new Range Rover aimed at overcoming every terrain, no matter how difficult. The five door luxury large off-road 4 x 4 is built at Solihull plant, England and is in its fourth generation.
Although four engine variants are available on the all-new Range Rover line-up two diesel and two petrol, the Nigerian market will be settling for the petrol engines due to the poor quality of diesel available in the country.
The petrol engine include a single 5.0 litre V8 engine unit which has two versions: naturally aspirated engine that produces 380ps (279 kw; 375 horse-power) of power and 510 Nm (376 1b ft) of torque, while the supercharged version produces 510ps (375 kw; 503 horse-power) of power and 625 Nm (461 1b.ft) of torque.
These engines are mated to eight-speed automatic transmission and the gears can also be selected from Drive Select Rotary Shifter from the Centre Console or driver can manually select gears via the paddle shift control on the steering wheel.
Range Rover is equipped with permanent intelligent four wheel drive with 50/50 torque split and a two-speed transfer box for high and low range options, helping to maintain traction and stability in challenging conditions on-road, off-road or when towing, the new Range Rover comes with a new Terrain Response.
It’s all-terrain capability features a new second generation Terrain Response system. The system monitors ground conditions to determine the most appropriate response to the terrain and automatically optimises vehicle settings for enhanced and assured experience for almost all driving conditions. The system provides settings for grass, gravel, mud, sand and rock crawl, Terrain Response technology instance, reconfigures transmission, suspension and traction settings for maximum drivability in almost all conditions.
Range Rovers Control Acceleration Control prevents excessive speed downhill and Hill Start Assist prevents the vehicle from inadvertently rolling backwards.
As a pacesetter in its class, the all new Range Rover is equipped with electronic cross-linked air suspension (with variable ride height) and multiple suspension adjustment modes are provided as standard, including access, normal on-road, off-road and extended height. A new extra intermediate setting adds greater convenience and improves handling across the vehicle’s breath of capabilities.
Another exciting feature of the suspension is the automated load leveling mechanism. Advanced intelligent suspension technologies assist the Range Rover’s performance and achieve consistent driving refinement on and off-road while adaptive dynamics continuously analyse vehicle movements over 500 times per second, reacting instantaneously to road conditions and driver actions. Infinitely variable dampers adjust to maintain a composed and balance ride.
Also Dynamic response system transforms handling and comfort for all occupants. It independently adjusts and monitors front, and rear suspension units, reducing the amount of body roll during cornering, as well as enhancing control stability at higher speeds.
The all-new Range Rover is no doubt one of the safest SUV in its class especially with its aluminum body. Driver and passenger airbags, cornering brake control, which helps to maintain stability when cornering by adjusting the driver’s generated brake pressure, along with dynamic stability control to maintain control by reducing engine torque and applying braking to the appropriate wheels and correcting under-steer or over-steer.
Generally, the new Range Rover interior is a specious five star setting with quality leather trim, DVD, individual air-conditioning control, multi-function steering wheel etc. No wonder it is the choice car for the high and mighty around the world when it comes to SUVs.
