AKURE — Governor Olusegun Mimiko of Ondo State has said that the active participation of the various communities in self-help projects remained the fastest way of spreading development into rural areas.

For Nigeria to attain the desired level of development, Mimiko said that government’s efforts must be complemented by the various communities in the country.

He spoke weekend during the 2012 edition of the annual Idanre Day Celebration aimed at raising funds to build a civic centre through communal effort.

Speaking through his Chief of Staff, Dr. Kola Ademujimi, the governor commended the vision of the community and noted that such initiative would assist government to embark on other viable projects that will uplift the living standard of the people.

Also disturbed by the incessant loss of lives on the Akungba-Ikare road in Ondo State, the state government has concluded arrangements to find a permanent solution to the death traps that had resulted in the death of over 50 persons in recent past.

Commissioner of Work, Mr. Adegboye Adegbenro said at the weekend during the inspection tour of the roads that the government could not fold its arms watching the people dying on daily basis along the road.

The hilly spots along Akungba-Ikare and Okia-Oka roads have claimed over 50 lives including that of the Chairman of Akoko Southwest Local Government, Mrs. Opeyemi Adefarati.

Despite the fact that the roads belong to the Federal Government, the Commissioner for Works said the state government would have to intervene to prevent further loss of lives on the road.
