2011: CNPP tasks INEC on credible polls

By Samuel Oyadongha
Yenagoa — The Conference of Nigeria Political Parties, CNPP, yesterday, tasked the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, to conduct credible polls in 2011, insisting that the dominance of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, in the politics of the state is drawing to a close.

Chairman of CNPP Bayelsa State chapter, Mr. Sunday Frank-Oputu, who spoke to newsmen in Yenagoa, stressed the need for adequate preparation by INEC so as to ensure a free and fair poll.

The CNPP boss who said the political parties in the state would be all out to challenge the dominance of the ruling party in the state, added that the feat could only be achieved with the cooperation of the electoral body.

“We are ready for the election and clamouring for one man one vote as stated by President Goodluck Jonathan. We should be discussing about the success of the electoral process because if it is strengthened, there will be good governance,” he said.

Oputu said the CNPP had set up a committee to enlighten the people of the state on the importance of voter registration ahead of the elections.

The CNPP chairman said his members should be seen as stakeholders in building a peaceful and egalitarian Bayelsa State rather than being seen as opposition.

“The peace of Bayelsa State is dear to our hearts. We should be able to ensure peace because of the Bayelsa project. I don’t believe in using our youth to cause problems,” he said noting that politicians who are in the habit of enticing young people with money to cause mayhem were doing a lot of harm to the youth because the money would not feed the young people or their families the day after.

On the alleged factional crisis rocking the boat of the CNPP, the Chairman said, “the CNPP is intact and our task is to checkmate the excesses in our electoral system. Our major objectives are to protect the interest of members; to oppose and proffer solutions to every policy of the government of the day.”
