2011: Group backs Jonathan

By Taye Obateru

Jos — A body known as Goodluck Solidarity Movement, GSM, has dismissed the clamour by some prominent people from the North for the continuation of zoning of the presidency, saying they are speaking for themselves and not the whole Northern part of the country.

National Coordinator of the movement, Mr. Pamson Dagyat said yesterday that youths in the North would no longer allow so-called elders to use the name of the region to further their selfish political and other interests.

According to him, “they are not speaking the mind of the North. None of them is below the age of 50. We are talking of spent forces in the Nigeria polity that feel management of Nigeria is their birthright. But the youths in the North don’t reason that way, we are after social service delivery.”

Dagyat noted that the zoning arrangement which some of the elders have been using to insist that the North should produce the next president was a gentleman’s agreement of the PDP which should not be used to hold the country to ransome.

He said the group and other youths in the North would support President Jonathan for the election, urging him not to succumb to the antics of the self-styled Northern leaders.

“What the Northern elders want to do is to box him to a corner. President Jonathan should not succumb to their antics. He has started well by his appointments into various sectors of the economy including the recent appointment of Professor Attahiru Jega as the Chairman of INEC,” he noted.
