ABUJA—Barring any last minute change, three Census Tribunals constituted by the Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), ten months ago, are scheduled to begin sitting on July 21, this year over various petitions filed by some states of the Federation, including Lagos and Kano to challenge the results of the 2006 population census.

By the results announced on the 2006 census, Kano is the most populous state of the Federation with a population figure of 9,401,288 followed by Lagos with 9,113,605 as population figure.

But both states with the largest population as shown in the results of the head counts have rejected the results. They have since filed complaints before the tribunals.

The tribunals are expected to begin examining the merits in their petitions from July 21, this year. Kano filed a petition on behalf of each of the 40 local government areas in the state while Lagos filed a composite petition.
