Giwa sacks League Management Company

Giwa sacks League Management Company

League action

The new Chairman of Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), Chris Giwa, on Monday night  sacked the League Management Company, LMC.

The Giwa-led board, in a communiqué after its maiden meeting in Abuja  Monday night, said the LMC sabotaged the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) week 26 matches.

This was in solidarity with the factional NFA congress, which had refused to accept the emergence of Giwa as NFA chairman.

Obinna Ogba, first Vice Chairman of the NFA who read the communiqué of their meeting to newsmen said a six man committee had been constituted to oversee the Nigeria Premier League (NPL).

“The members of the committee are Mr Fatai Olaniyan (Chairman), Rumson Baribote, Okey Ibe, Isaac Danladi, Tijani Babanginda, Babangida Little and Tunji Babalola who will serve as the Secretary.

“They will oversee the NPL matches till the end of the ongoing season.

“The committee is also mandated to chart a new roadmap for elections into the board of the NPL’’, Ogba said.

He also said that a committee had been constituted to investigate the members of the LMC and the NRA to ascertain the level of their involvement in the sabotage of the league.

Members of the committee are Inuwa Umar, O.O Olaniyan, while Chris Akon and Sunday Okayi would serve as the Chairman and Secretary respectively.

Another committee was also set up to work out modalities for movement to the new NFA secretariat.

They are Effiong Johnson as Chairman, Adama Yahaya and Chris Emeruwa as Secretary.

A committee chaired by Gen. Dominic Oneya was set up to reconcile all the factions amongst the football family and accordingly advise the NFA on how to avoid future conflict.

Other members of the committee are Ibrahim Galadima, Gabriel Chukwuma, Dickson Adejube and Onje Gyewado.

The LMC had suspended league matches  on Wednesday after referees were directed not to take charges of matches in protest at a governance crisis in the domestic game.

In another development, Chris Giwa,  has said that the election that brought him into office on Aug. 26 in Abuja was “irreversible.”

Giwa’s statement came on the heels of another planned board election being organized  by the Aminu Miagari-led NFA for Sept. 4 in Abuja.

Giwa, who spoke to newsmen at the NFA secretariat, said the planned election should be regarded as rumour.

“No, no, no there will never be an election on Sept. 4 because we will not and I repeat we will not allow anybody to mess up with the NFA, CAF and FIFA statutes, no matter who the person thinks he is.

“Where is it on earth that in less than one week you tell me you can organise an election where we have a statute giving us a mandatory period of time.

“A congress sat on Nov. 28, 2013 and agreed that election will hold on Aug. 26 and somebody will wake up because he has lost out to tell us he wants to conduct election; no, it will not happen’’, Giwa said.

On whether he doubted the letter which FIFA sent warning of impending ban, he said he had no reason to doubt the letter.

He assured the public that FIFA will not ban the country as they have replied FIFA on the latest development.

“I am confident that Nigeria Football Association (NFA) will not be sanctioned because I know FIFA as an organisation that is not biased, an organisation that will listen to everybody and the right decision will be taken.

“I am confident that this is the last hurdle and by the grace of God’’, he added.

He also said the referees’ strike which affected the Premier league matches this weekend would be sorted out this week.

Giwa further said that Musa Amadu, the NFA’s Secretary-General had abandoned his position to Bola Oyeyede, NFA Head of International Competition department.

Nigeria Premier League organisers the League Management Committee said it was “impossible for us to organise games” as a result of the directive from the Nigeria Referees Association (NRA).

The NRA earlier ordered that all referees slated to officiate in the Premier League should withdraw from matches “until sanity is restored” in the national game.

The Premier League and National League are both in their 25th week of action.

Defending champions Kano Pillars currently top the table with 43 points.

League Management Committee official Salihu Abubakar said clubs and their sponsorship partners have been informed and teams directed not to proceed to venues of their scheduled games until further notice.
