THE recent dismal performance of our students nationwide in the NECO exams results is a climax of the continued decay in our educational system in this country. We have all the human and material resources to do better, but leadership failure remains the bane of growth and development in our education sector.

A new Executive Council of the Federation, EXCOF, may be reconstituted this week following last week’s Senate screening and approval of the nominees sent by Acting President Goodluck Jonathan.

SINCE the end of Anambra governorship election held on February 6 where the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) declared Governor Peter Obi the winner, I have taken my time to read every article or comments written on the outcome of the election.

LAST week’s judgement of the Court of Appeal in Enugu which nullified the election of Senator Dr. Joy Emodi (Adadioranma) into the Senate came to many of us Anambrarians as a great surprise and a very unfortunate development.

In the midst of our present chaos, the hopelessness in the land, the skepticisms and fear that pervades our national psyche, the next 365 days offer a chance that we join hands together and restore the trust that is much needed between our people and government.

There are not many journalists, Lagos-based that is, who will spurn an opportunity of a trip out of the metropolis even if it is all about being far from the ever maddening traffic. The duration does not have to be long. The important thing is just to get out to let off steam.

THE journey from the Kirikiri Canal offices of Vanguard Newspapers to my residence ought not to be more than a 20-minute drive on normal smooth and free road. But in Nigeria, there is hardly anything normal in our day-to-day activities as a people, anymore; and so, leaving Vanguard premises at 5.35pm, I had hoped that at the very worst I would make it home in an hour. But as it turned out, by 10.00 pm I was still locked up in the middle of a no-moving traffic.

IN the last few weeks or so, a self-styled social crusader has been raised to the level of a hero or do one say, a ‘living martyr’ by some sections of the media ostensibly working for a legal practitioner who enjoys media trial.

THE first thing that strikes you about Dr Stanley Macebuh was his affectations. His urbanity and sophistication could not be missed, and it came out of him effortlessly. I am not sure whether he cultivated it or it has always been part of his make-up. Whatever it was, the impression that he was a knowledgeable, a well-travelled and exposed man, self-assured would impress you the more when you engage him in conversation.

IN any true democratic society, the constitution is the supreme law of the land that must be obeyed by all authorities and persons. There has also not been any situation where a true democratic society allowed two presidents or heads of state to direct the affairs of a country at the same time.

As the people get more confused, ministers were busy dropping bombshell of lies in Abuja. The former Minister of Justice even turned the law upside down by saying that Mr. President can rule by proxy from any part of the world! Other members of the kitchen cabinet claimed they saw the President who was actually under intense care of King Faisal Hospital. Madam First Lady was said to be the ring leader in churning out the other side of the truth.
