Anglican archbishop stands by his catholic brothers in Christ, by Donu Kogbara

Last week on this page, I hailed Cardinal John Onaiyekan, the Catholic Emeritus Archbishop of Abuja, for speaking up when President Tinubu responded callously to Catholic bishops’ concerns about widespread poverty and insecurity. Daniel Bwala, an accident-prone presidential spokesman, accused Onaiyekan of speaking only for Catholics. “NOT SO!” was the robust rejoinder from Christian leaders from […]

Buhari’s foreign forum

SEVERAL people have grumbled to me – and in various public fora – about the speech Mr President gave at the United Nations General Assembly, UNGA, earlier on this week…on the grounds that he barely focussed on Nigeria and mostly talked about other African countries and the rest of the world.

ACCORDING to Elder Markson Fefegha, Commissioner of Education, the Bayelsa State Government has pledged to continue investing in education because of its strong commitment to developing human capital.

I still struggle to empty my head of incarceration-related daymares and nightmares…and find it extremely hard to summon up the courage to go home to Port Harcourt…and have not been able to bring myself to sleep in the family residence again

TheirMumuDonDo

LAST week, I wrote about OurMumuDonDo, the protest group that is tired of the mystery surrounding Mr. President’s health, concerned about the fact that he has been away from his desk for most of this year while receiving medical treatment and insisting that he either returns from the UK soon or resigns.

THERE can be humour in serious matters; and I nearly fell off my perch, laughing till tears came to my eyes, when I heard that the zany, iconoclastic entertainer, Charley Boy Oputa, is heading a new “movement” known as #OurMumuDonDo!

Restructuring, IPOB, nationhood

Restructuring, IPOB, nationhood

LAST week, I complained about the Senate’s failure to act on widespread calls for restructuring by refusing to pass bills relating to proposed devolution of legislative powers to states and proposed deletion of the Land Use Act from the Constitution.

Senate ignores calls for change

Senate ignores calls for change

I’m told that the Land Use bill failed because of strong opposition from Northern senators, who fear resource control “through the back door”; which basically means that they want to withhold justice from oil-producing states

Separatist perspectives

Separatist perspectives

Last week, I wearily described Nigeria as an arranged marriage of convenience that has always been troubled and convenient only for certain groups…because it was (in my opinion) organized by conniving British colonial officials who were not strong on emotional intelligence and possessed pretty dire matchmaking skills.

The heinous crimes presently being perpetrated by young people are too heart-rending. We cannot continue like this. Something has to be done. Nigerians who have carted away the commonwealth must make reparation to our youth

Rampant Igbophobia — Readers responses

Rampant Igbophobia — Readers responses

The quit notice by the CNY, as far as I am concerned, does not hold water, reason being that IPOB and MASSOB in their agitations have not asked other Nigerians residing in the South East to leave or threaten their means of livelihood

Rampant Igbophobia

Rampant Igbophobia

I shook my head sadly when I read the toxic tribalistic tripe that is being churned out by the Igbophobists who occupy certain internet sites and write demonising open letters; and I am so worried by all this rampant Igbophobia

Osinbajo is a Class Act who also has a Common Touch; he is an elitist…and a populist when it is necessary to come down to earth and sincerely empathise with ordinary folks

Re: Who will protect Nigeria’s Northern Christians?

Re: Who will protect Nigeria’s Northern Christians?

The international community pretends that this situation is a tit-for-tat problem, rather than a one-sided slaughter. Meanwhile, in Nigeria, the press fails to report or actively obscures the situation. Christians in the south of the country feel little solidarity with their co-religionists suffering from this Islamic revivalism and territorial conquest in the north. And worst of all, the plight of these people is of no interest to their own government. In fact, this ethnic and religious cleansing appears to be taking place with that government’s complicity or connivance…

I’m praying that the spirit of statesmanliness will enter Amaechi’s heart and propel him towards his ancestral turf on our special anniversary; fingers crossed that he gives peace a chance on this significant date
