Awka—THE Anambra State Inter Party Advisory Council, IPAC, an umbrella body for all registered political parties in the state, yesterday, called on the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, to fix a date for the rerun of the controversial Anambra Central senatorial election, regretting that the people of the zone have been left out of decision -making in the country’s upper legislative chambers as a result of the impasse.

Rising from a meeting in Awka, chairmen of 13 political parties under the aegis of IPAC expressed worry at the lingering impasse, noting that despite the Court of Appeal judgment that nullified the election of Mrs. Uche Ekwunife and the consequent order for a fresh election within 90 days from December 7, 2015, INEC was yet to conduct the exercise to fill the vacancy.

The state chairman of IPAC, Sir Norbert Obi, who is also the state chairman of All Progressives Grand Alliance, APGA, observed that the delay in conducting the senatorial election for Anambra Central constituted a gross disenfranchisement of the rights of the people of the zone to freely choose their representative to the senate.

The statement by the council read: “The current state of affairs has left the good people of Anambra Central disoriented due to continued absence of a senator for the district, with the attendant loss of the benefits, and other dividends currently being enjoyed by senatorial districts.”
