The human kidneys keep the composition, or makeup, of the blood stable allowing the body function optimally. Every day, the pair of kidneys filter about 120 to 150 quarts of blood to produce about 1 to 2 quarts of urine, composed of wastes and extra fluid. But then, sometimes certain medical conditions can occur to alter the optimal functioning of these organs.
The kidneys help perform these functions in the body: prevent the buildup of wastes and extra fluid in the body; keep levels of electrolytes stable, such as sodium, potassium, and phosphate; make hormones that help; regulate blood pressure; make red blood cells and help the bones stay strong. But for 49-year-old father of five, Olanrewaju Abimbola Olaoba, life has not been the same for close to one year, because he as lost the optimal function of his kidneys..
Laying on his sick bed at the Ekiti State University Teaching Hospital, Olaoba, was in February diagnosed with chronic kidney disease. He is also hypertensive.
The result of the kidney diagnosis showed the organs, were fast losing normal function as a result of chronic infection.
For Olaoba who only recently lost his wife to breast cancer, life will only return to normal only after he undergoes a kidney transplant.
Medical report
A medical report issued by the Consultant Nephrologist, Dr. O Aremu of the EKSUTH, Olaoba has been having sessions of hemodialysis “but grossly inadequate due to financial constraints”.
Aremu placed Olaoba on a twice weekly session of hemodialysis which cost N20, 000 per session, and when regular checks and medications for his hypertensive condition among others are factored in, the cost rises to N147, 000 but strongly recommends immediate kidney transplant to save his life.
Olaoba now undergoes renal dialysis thrice a week at the MTN Renal Clinic of the hospital.
He is completely broke because he hasn’t been well enough to run his restaurant business since January 2015 even as his five children are struggling to remain in school.
A family member, Revd. Olaitan Olaoba said: “The enormous financial task of the weekly required dialysis he undergoes to keep him alive is presently crippling the family financially. He is desperately in need of help.
“We plead for humanitarian financial assistance from good philanthropic citizens of Nigeria.”
Olaoba is soliciting N7 million to undergo an urgent renal transplant either in Nigeria or India. He needs to maintain hemodialysis until the kidney transplant is done.
