The Nigeria Union of Journalists, NUJ, has advised the incoming administration of the President- elect, General Muhammadu Buhari, (rtd), to give the media unfettered access to the process of governance and those in government if he must succeed in the war against corruption in the country.

This was contained in a communiqué signed by the National Secretary of the NUJ, Shuaibu Usman Leman, after the World Press Freedom Day in Kaduna yesterday.

The event, held in partnership with UNESCO and the Nigerian Press Council, NPC, had the theme, ‘’Let Journalism Thrive Towards Better Reporting, Gender Equality and Media Safety in Digital Age.’’

‘’There is the urgent need for the in-coming administration to know that good governance and the fight against corruption can only succeed in Nigeria, if the press is given unfettered access to the process of governance and those in government,’’ the union stated. The communiqué read in part, ‘’At the end of the day (World Press Freedom Day), the following resolutions were made:

‘’There is need for capacity building for journalists so as to make them better prepared for the digitalisation of the broadcast media.

‘’In furtherance to the one above, it is considered view of the participants that there is need for the enactment of a strong legal backing with a view to enforcing the June 2015 deadline for digitalisation.
