2015: Candidates woo voters via new year text messages

By Clifford Ndujihe

FACED with inadequate time to tour the length and breadth of their constituencies for campaigns, some politicians have devised new and quicker ways of reaching the electorate.

Apart from Facebook, Skype, Instagram, Twitter, WhatsApp and other social media platforms, some candidates, weekend, tried to reach the grassroots through text messages. And the yuletide celebrations offered them a veritable opportunity.

Among those who used New Year text messages to reach would-be-voters, yesterday, included Lagos Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, governorship candidate, Mr. Jimi Agbaje; Citizens Popular Party, CPP, presidential candidate, Dr. Sam Eke, and former President of Association of Local Government of Nigeria, ALGON, who is gunning for a senatorial seat in Enugu State, Ozo Okafor.

In a 18-word text message, Dr. Eke, who is promising Nigerians a tremendous change if elected as president said: ‘’Happy new 2015 from Chief Sam Eke, PhD and Hassan Hassan, presidential and vice presidential candidates of CPP.’’

On his part, Agbaje texted: ‘’Beloved Lagosians, as 2014 ends, I pray peace and prosperity fill our state in 2015. let us be part of the change our dear state needs. Happy new year.’’

In like manner, Okafor texted: ‘’As we step into the new year 2015, we wish you God’s blessing and protection. Think of big ideas, continue to support and vote Okpochengene for Senate –Ozo Nwabueze Okafor.’’
