A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and security expert, Abayomi Nurain Mumuni, has called for an immediate review and reinforcement of Nigeria’s security architecture in response to the worsening security situation across the country.

He also cautioned against the proliferation of fake news, inflammatory comments and divisive rhetoric, warning that such actions risk undermining national unity and diverting attention from efforts aimed at tackling the nation’s security challenges.

Mumuni’s intervention came amid ongoing protests in parts of Oyo State following the abduction of schoolchildren, with anxious parents, residents and civil society organisations demanding swift and decisive action from both government authorities and security agencies.

In a statement issued on Wednesday through his media aide, Rasheed Abubakar, the APC stalwart described the persistent wave of kidnappings and abductions as a national emergency affecting families and communities in every part of Nigeria.

“On a matter that weighs heavily on the conscience of our nation, the persistent threat of kidnapping and abductions continues to affect families across every region of Nigeria,” Mumuni stated.

“The scourge of kidnapping is not a localised challenge. No state, no community and no family remains untouched by this crisis. I recognise the anguish of parents, the trauma of communities and the collective anxiety that grips our nation. These are our citizens, our children, our future.”

The security expert urged Nigerians to remain patient and continue supporting security agencies despite growing public frustration over the recurring incidents of abductions and violent attacks.

According to him, security operatives are confronting highly organised criminal syndicates and terrorist networks whose operations require strategic responses, sustained efforts and long-term commitment.

“I call for patience and sustained commitment from Nigerians towards our security forces. The adversaries they face are not mere criminals but organised terrorist cells with sophisticated networks and distributed operations targeting vulnerable populations. The complexity of these threats demands time, strategy and unwavering resolve,” he said.

Mumuni further urged security personnel to intensify efforts to rescue victims, dismantle criminal networks and prevent future attacks, while maintaining accountability and transparency in the discharge of their duties.

He also appealed to political leaders, social commentators, media practitioners and members of the public to exercise caution and responsibility in discussions surrounding security matters, stressing that misinformation and provocative statements could exacerbate tensions and weaken national cohesion.

“I also appeal for responsible discourse. While constructive criticism strengthens institutions, inflammatory and venomous statements undermine national unity and distract from solutions. Your platforms carry influence; use them to inform, unite and inspire rather than inflame,” he said.

The APC chieftain emphasised the need for compassion towards affected families, noting that national conversations should focus on supporting victims rather than exploiting tragedies for political advantage.

“Let us show genuine concern for affected families. Our words and actions must reflect empathy, not political calculation. The families of the kidnapped deserve our immediate attention and support,” he added.

Mumuni maintained that the current security situation demands urgent reforms and a thorough reassessment of existing government strategies.

“This moment demands urgent action. Existing government mechanisms require comprehensive review and strengthening. Enhanced intelligence networks, resource allocation, inter-agency coordination and community engagement must be prioritised immediately,” he said.

He underscored the critical importance of strengthening intelligence gathering, improving funding for security operations, fostering closer collaboration among security agencies and encouraging active community participation in the fight against insecurity.

Describing national security as a collective responsibility, Mumuni urged Nigerians to remain vigilant, promptly report suspicious activities to the appropriate authorities and maintain confidence in the country’s ability to overcome its security challenges.

“National security is a shared responsibility. I call on all Nigerians to support one another, report suspicious activities and maintain faith in our collective capacity to overcome this challenge,” he stated.
