A long-standing political arrangement in Kogi East aimed at promoting rotation and inclusivity is drawing renewed attention, as a coalition of stakeholders reiterates the importance of maintaining the district’s unwritten two-term convention.

The group—comprising youths, women, and elders—said the stability recorded in the senatorial district over the years has been supported by a gentleman’s understanding that encourages leadership rotation and broader participation.

In a statement issued on Saturday and signed by spokesperson Ibrahim Mohammed, the stakeholders noted that adherence to this arrangement has contributed to balance and continuity in the district’s political landscape.

Their remarks come amid ongoing political discussions within the constituency regarding future representation. While no official position has been confirmed by any potential aspirant, the group emphasised the need to uphold established norms that encourage leadership renewal.

Rather than focusing on any individual, the stakeholders stressed the broader implications for governance and democratic accountability. According to them, the rotational principle has helped foster equity and provided opportunities for wider representation.

“For over two decades, this understanding has supported leadership renewal and responsiveness to the people. Sustaining it will further strengthen participation and trust,” the statement noted.

The group also cautioned against narratives that could undermine public confidence in the electoral process, emphasising that electoral outcomes should reflect the will of the people.

Mohammed underscored the importance of credible and transparent processes, noting that political legitimacy is rooted in the electorate.

The stakeholders further called on political leaders in the state to continue to support a fair and open democratic process, stressing that neutrality would help sustain public trust ahead of the 2027 elections.

Looking ahead, the group said it would continue grassroots engagement across the nine local government areas in Kogi East to promote awareness of the zoning understanding and encourage inclusive participation.

They added that sustained dialogue and respect for established practices would help preserve the relative stability of the district’s political environment.
