NEV Electric Motors has unveiled the NEV T3, an electric mobility van designed for use in African cities, as part of ongoing efforts to expand electric transportation options in Nigeria.

The company said the new model builds on its earlier vehicle, the NEV T6, which it claims has transported thousands of passengers across urban routes while reducing fuel costs and eliminating tailpipe emissions.

Speaking at the launch, the firm’s founder and Chief Executive Officer, Mosope Olaosebikan, said the NEV T3 was engineered to meet the demands of African road and transport conditions.

“The success of the NEV T6 proved that electric mobility can work in Africa,” he said. “With the NEV T3, we are introducing a vehicle designed for efficiency, reliability and sustainability in urban centres.”

According to Olaosebikan, the company aims to support the adoption of electric vehicles across the continent by producing locally engineered models and developing charging infrastructure.

In addition to manufacturing vehicles, NEV Electric Motors has begun deploying electric vehicle charging stations in selected urban locations and transport corridors across Nigeria as part of plans to build a broader charging network.

Industry stakeholders say the availability of both locally assembled electric vehicles and reliable charging infrastructure will be key to reducing reliance on petrol-powered transport.

An electric vehicle expert, Johnson Emmanuel, said electric vehicles generally offer lower operating costs compared to conventional vehicles and contribute to reduced air pollution and greenhouse gas emissions.

He noted that the NEV T3 is intended for passenger transport, corporate mobility and urban logistics, and is designed to operate under African road conditions with reduced maintenance requirements.

“With growing urban populations and rising fuel costs, electric mobility solutions such as the NEV T3 are being considered as alternatives for transportation in cities like Lagos and Abuja,” Emmanuel said.

The introduction of the NEV T3 comes amid increasing interest in electric vehicles in Nigeria, as government agencies and private investors explore cleaner transportation options.
